James Baker has a PhD in mathematics and has over 30 years of experience in innovation and technology development for industrial, university, and government organizations.

His first exposure to a photographic story was when he was a scientist at the Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory. One of his colleagues had taken a road trip from Washington, D.C. through Mexico and shared a photo sequence of his trip. It had a profound impact and became something he wanted to do. It also launched his interest in photography.

Much later he had the opportunity to try this as part of his work as the founding President of FX Palo Alto Laboratory, which was an American research lab that worked for the Fuji Xerox of Japan and Asia. During this period he used photos, videos, and demos to describe the technology and research results because he did not speak Japanese.

He has over 20 research publications in Mathematics, Operations Research, and Artificial Intelligence, and two photo essay publications.
