Welcome to my laboratory for experimenting with different techniques for telling more effective stories.

James D. Baker: A Photographic Journey

It is said that, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.  If true, then a sequence of pictures combined with text, speech, and music becomes a powerful means for communication.  The goal is to tell stories with this model.  Some results are presented here.  It is my system for experimenting with different techniques for telling multimedia stories.

Seeing Santa Fe

Santa Fe is indeed a “City Different”. It is a city that is unique in its ethnic diversity and cultural differences. It is a famous city for art, having less than 100K population there are over 250 galleries with artists in traditional and contemporary painting, photography, pottery sculpture, and textiles. As an art center, it is second only to New York. And there is a world renowned opera.

Hawk Family

An enormous bird nest was spotted on a hike south of Santa Fe, NM. It turned out to belong to a pair of hawks. For the next 18 months, they were watched and photographed.  Before long there were three baby hawks in the nest. The photography continues as the fledglings grew.  After leaving for the winter, the two hawks returned the following year.  They recognized the photographer and did not seem to mind being watched and photographed.

Take Me Out to the (Pueblo) Ballgame

The Pueblos in New Mexico have been playing baseball, and in uniform, for over 120 years. Yet few people are aware of this. Much of the history has been documented in the book, “New Mexico’s Pueblo Baseball League”. Many of the 19 Pueblos use competitive baseball to enhance both communication and community. The story here is of an opening season game at Cochiti Pueblo and illustrates what a game would be like if attended today.

Seeing Differently

John Barker is a popular Santa Fe artist. He has developed a very original and creative abstract style. This video story integrates some of his work with his philosophy and approach to art.

Short Clips

The goal of Short Clips is to give a more comprehensive view of a place or subject than is possible with a single image. The topics are presented here as a short slide show of four to six images.

Sense of Place

Sense of Place in photography means that the image creates emotions regarding the essential character or spirit of the place.  That is, it captures what makes it special or unique via a cultural or natural identity.  Sometimes the place is where there has been important human activity and there is an emotional linking of the image to what has happened there. The viewer can say the image captures the feelings associated with the place.  The key ingredient is the emotional response and the quality of the photographic image needs to convey this.

9/11

This image is taken from the spot where Flight 175 hit one of the Twin Towers in New York City on 9/11.  The image is of a hole in the ground where a giant skyscraper once stood. This creates a powerful sense of loss and destruction. There is also a strong link to the loss of the flight.

Broken Saddle Riding Company

This image is an icon of the wild west. The place exists today in this way. Many people have visited to ride horses in the scenic wilds south of Santa Fe.
